Abstract

The religious experience that arises in the sixteenth century Spain was surrounded by the desire for a more individualized communion with God, putting at risk the various intermediations between the divinity and the faithful. In what was the time of the Protestant Reforms, the Inquisition did not go to great lengths to establish the specificities of Catholicism in the face of insurgent religiosities. It was at some cost that the boundary between lawful and illicit was blurred, blurred and ambiguous for many years. Based on the theory of confessionalization, we aim to understand the reach of indoctrination and persecution to deviant ways of experiencing the sacred, particularly with regard to the case of the Magdalena de la Cruz. The supposed misrepresentation of his visions, qualified by the Inquisition as an index of the demonic pact, will be the gateway to an approach to the processes of exclusion from otherness, highlighting the cultural interactions of the period. Our project aims, therefore, to understand the mechanisms by which the Catholic hierarchy tried to implement a discipline regulating important religious dynamics present in that context.
