Abstract

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a major component of the carbon-pool in aquatic systems and thus represents an important pathway on the carbon cycle, especially in marine environments. For instance, studies have used DOM to assess drinking water quality, its importance on biogeochemical cycles, its usefulness as an environmental tracer, etc. This project aims at performing a characterization of DOM in surface and deep layers of the SW Atlantic by employing state-of-the-art DOM measurements. Additionally, the distribution, transformation and production of DOM will be assessed to provide novel insights on the carbon cycling in the shelf and deep ocean domains. The results generated by DOMAt will be used as a baseline for future environmental impact monitoring especially of the deep ocean zones close to the São Paulo Ridge and Rio Grande Rise, which is of great economical interested due to the exploration of ferromanganese oxide deposits and ore extraction.
