Abstract

Studies on the timing of discontinuation of physiotherapy, beyond the objective of comparing treatments, are rare and usually address very specific groups of patients. This is a descriptive exploratory study with a descriptive character and a quantitative approach that aims to investigate at the time of discharge the levels of self-efficacy among patients who were admitted to a public physiotherapy service at the secondary level for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Our hypothesis is that there will be a moderate correlation between the level of self-efficacy reported for managing pain, functionality and other symptoms, and the therapist-patient interaction, since patient education is dependent on training and communication skills in interaction with therapist. Patients will be recruited consecutively from the age of 40 years who were discharged after physiotherapeutic treatment whose diagnostic hypothesis that motivated the referral was a chronic musculoskeletal condition. An evaluation card will be applied to characterize the subjects, the Self-Efficacy Scale for Chronic Pain and the answers to questions 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12 of the Med Risk Instrument for Measuring Patient Satisfaction. To verify the correlation between items of therapist-patient interaction, the perception of clinical improvement and the capacity for self-efficacy will be used the Pearson correlation. The relationships between the self-efficacy scores and the other independent variables will be addressed by a Multiple Linear regression. Initially, a Pearson correlation will be performed to verify the relationship between Med Risk items of interest with age, treatment time, pain intensity and injury time, initially correlations between all variables will be calculated in both cases in order to know which variables to consider in the model. The significance level adopted will be pd 0.05. All statistical analyzes will be performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program (SPSS-20.0). (AU)
