Abstract

Byttnerioideae, Helicterioideae and Sterculioideae are monophyletic groups traditionally grouped within Sterculiaceae, which is no more recognized, because it is not monophyletic. Currently they are part of Malvaceae sensu lato, an important pantropical family whose species in Brazil occur in all domains. Nowadays, the need of more collecting efforts throughout Brazilian Southeast region persists, especially within protected areas, leading to proposals of floristic survey as the present one. Besides, the fact that there are few active researchers on Malvaceae encourages formation and specialization of new taxonomists. Hence, this work aims to contribute to the biogeography, conservation and taxonomy of the three subfamilies mentioned above, focusing on the Southeast region of Brazil, where they are a prominent group. Available data indicates nine genera and 53 species of the three subfamilies in the Atlantic Forest, 39 of them occurring in Southeastern Region. The study will be based on exploration of three guiding issues: (1) to map distributions of species within Atlantic Forest, and to analyze biogeographic patterns of the three subfamilies within this domain, defining centers of diversity and areas of endemism and biogeographic limits; (2) to study occurrence and distribution of the studied species within protected areas of Atlantic Forest, evaluating conservation potential of such areas and detecting protection gaps; and (3) to provide a synoptic treatment of species of the three subfamilies in Southeastern Region, providing diagnostic descriptions, identification keys, and a compilation of ecological and geographical data. Fundamental hypothesis to be explored in this project are: do Byttnerioideae, Helicterioideae and Sterculioideae groups contribute with spatial evidence corroborating richness, diversity and endemism patterns already proposed in the literature about the Atlantic Forest biota? Do they contribute with relevant subsidies for management and conservation initiatives of this vegetation, mostly concerning Southeast Brazil? (AU)
