Abstract

The harmful effects of cigarette smoke are not limited only to the body of the smoker. Nicotine, due to its toxic effects, causes serious alterations in the bone metabolism, which may impair alveolar bone repair. Low potency laser therapy (LBP) has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in addition to modulating tissue repair, accelerating healing and improving the bone repair process. Objective: To evaluate the influence of cigarette smoke on the application of low power laser on bone remodeling after dental extraction in rats. Material and Methods: A total of 60 Wistar rats were randomly divided into the following groups: Control Group (n = 15) animals with Extraction, Experimental Group I (n = 15) animals with Ext and LBP application, Experimental Group II (n = 15) animals with Ext and presence of cigarette smoke (FC), Experimental Group III (n = 15) animals with Ext, presence of CF and LBP application. The LBP will be applied in the first three days (54J / cm²). Each group will be subdivided into 3 experimental periods of evaluation, with the animals of each subgroup being sacrificed at 5, 15 and 20 days after tooth extraction. The protein expression of RANK, RANK-L, osteoprotegerin (OPG) will be evaluated. The results will be grouped according to the different study groups and experimental period, submitted to analysis of variance and compared by the Student t test. The difference will be considered statistically significant when p <0.05. (AU)
