Abstract

Rifaximin is an oral and non-systemic antimicrobial with minimal adverse effects. It is used for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, travelers' diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, Clostridium difficile, ulcerative colitis, bacterial vaginosis and acute diarrhea. In the market, 200 mg rifaximin tablets are found under the trade name Flonorm ". Rifaximin has not previously had standardized methods of analysis for the evaluation of its tablets in official compendia. This fact justifies new research in this area. Thus, this project aims to (i) develop and validate an analytical method for the quantification of rifaximin in tablets by spectrophotometry in the ultraviolet region, aiming at a miniaturized and eco-friendly method that meets the interests of industries, consumers and the environment at the same time. The results may be used in the construction of the product monograph, rifaximin tablet, as well as published in an international journal and published in a scientific event. This research contemplates a current, innovative topic and which is extremely important for the area of Quality Control of drugs and medicines. (AU)
