Abstract

In temperate environments, eutrophication is a process that raises nutrient levels in reservoirs and consequently increases the proliferation of cyanobacteria and chlorophytes, taxa considered to be poor in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as EPA and DHA. However, a study made in a hypereutrophic reservoir located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP), Billings reservoir, demonstrated high amounts of these fatty acids in carnivorous and omnivorous fish. EPA and DHA are important components of phospholipids, responsible for the regulation of the fluidity of biological membranes, a characteristic related to the degree of unsaturation of PUFAs. They also participate in reproductive processes influencing egg quality, spawning and larval survival. EPA and ARA (arachidonic acid), a PUFA of the n6 series, are important precursors of eicosanoids, a class of molecules that act as paracrine hormones and in the control of inflammation and immunity. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the influence of reservoir eutrophication on the fatty acid profile of membrane phospholipids in species of different feeding habits from another eutrophic reservoir of the MRSP, Guarapiranga reservoir. It is intended to understand if the results previously observed in the Billings reservoir can be considered as a standard in tropical eutrophic reservoirs, different from what is presented in the literature for temperate environment.
