Abstract

The project intends to discuss some motifs of the work of Henri Matisse, which evoke ideas of otherness - idyllic scenes, objects lent from tribal cultures, imaginary landscapes and figures of a pre-industrial world. The research examines these idyllic and Arcadian scenes which haunt Matisse's production as well as its relationship with images of the East and non-western cultures often evoked in it. In addition, it studies the fluctuating new modalities of attention brought about by industrial modernity and the way Matisse's painting resist them, demanding, instead, a kind of attention at one time contemplative and diffuse. The research intends to proceed through the deploying of formal analyses of the works, taking into account their compositional artifices and images codified as substitutions and condensations. (AU)
