Abstract

Meningitis is characterized by inflammation of the arachnoid, pia mater and cerebrospinal fluid, causing damage to cortical and subcortical structures. Bacterial meningitis is closely related to the country's socioeconomic development level and is considered endemic in Brazil. Despite efforts to develop drugs and vaccines, the disease still has a high morbidity rate. Meningitis occurs when bacteria traverses body protection barriers and reach the central nervous system, triggering an innate immune response. It is known that, during the course of the disease, levels of homocysteine in cerebrospinal fluid increase, and that vitamin B12 is a treatment used to decrease these levels, preventing demyelination, and other neuronal damage. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have roles in a variety of physiological response, having their expression modified in different tissues, due to different physiological and pathological stimuli. They are associated with control of expression of different inflammatory mediators, and their absence is able to cause severe damage to immune response. Considering the importance of miRNAs to regulate immune processes the present study aims to elucidate the patterns of expression of miRNAs during the inflammatory process of pneumococcal meningitis, as well as observe these patterns in response to adjuvant treatment of the disease with vitamin B12.
