Abstract

This Project is to investigate the expression of future in letters of readers of the magazine "A Cigarra" and the newspaper "A Gazeta" - published in the decade of 1920. Our interest is to identify possible extralinguistic conditionings related to gender and to the variable use of expressions of future, which are simple future tense and periphrastic (to GO + Infinitive). Considering that the magazine "A Cigarra" is for the female audience, we will confront the collected data with the data of the newspaper "A Gazeta" in search of clearing up, as predicted in literature (GIBBON, 2000; OLIVEIRA, 2006), the role of the female gender in the change's implantation of the groundbreaking form of future (periphrastic future). The theoretical-methodological precepts of Sociolinguistics and of Variation Theory (Labov, 2016 [1972]), according to which we will undertake a quantitative analysis of the data, will sustain our survay.
