Abstract

This project analyses the indigenous legislation during the Brazilian republican period, from the creation of the Indian Protection Service (Serviço de Proteção aos Índios - SPI), in 1910, until the 1988 Constitution. The purpose is to understand the relationship between the institution of "tutelage" and the transformation of the Indian into a "national worker". The analysis will focus on the legislative material previously inserted in the Database "Legislação: Trabalhadores e Trabalho em Portugal, Brasil e África Colonial Portuguesa" (http://www.ifch.unicamp.br/cecult/lex/web/). The student will carry out a bibliographical study on the subject and an examination of a set of about 20 already selected decrees, aiming to produce a short historical and historiographic essay on the main aspects of Brazilian indigenous politics in the 20th century.
