Abstract Since Ovid to the current days, it is possible to observe with some recurrence the themes of exile and the foreign condition within the field of literature (Queiroz, 1988). Imposed on voluntary, for political or personal reasons, the exile experience serves as a literary subject, interfering not only with personal life, but with the work of writers who have gone through the exile process; a process that does not always presuppose a geographical displacement that distances the person from his or her original community. Beyond an experience, exile is configured as an acquired or imposed condition and can be experienced by groups that share social conditions similar to that of the exile. And, as a condition, exile interferes with literary creation not only by providing authors with new thematic and narrative possibilities, but also by influencing the formal choices of an author at the time of producing his literary works. The present work aims to analyze how the themes of exile and the foreign condition are configured within the literature, observing which are the literary and linguistic elements used in the construction of texts with these themes. For this purpose we will use as an object of analysis the novel O Muro de Pedras, by Elisa Lispector, demonstrating how the exile and the foreign condition are central to the author's literary production.
