Abstract

Type VI Secretion Systems (T6SS) are specialized machines that deliver effector proteins directly into prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic target cells. T6SS are widespread in Proteobacteria, particularly within the Gamma subdivision. Several members of this group are involved in interspecific competition and play a fundamental role in bacterial fitness in their ecological niche. The genome of the phytopathogen Xanthomonas citri pv citri encodes a complete T6SS, which is required for bacterial survival against predation by Dictyostelium discoideum, a soil-living amoeba that likely cohabits with Xac in the environment. This project aims to identify proteins secreted by the Xac T6SS, as well as the mechanisms of their specific recruitment for secretion. Also, we propose to characterize the posttranslational control of T6SS activity. Data obtained in this work will help to elucidate the mechanisms of T6SS function in Xac environmental fitness, a key step of the citrus canker disease cycle. (AU)
