Abstract

This master s project intends to study aspects regarding the formation and the territorial occupation of the area served by the Tramway Cantareira, in São Paulo City. The strategy of investigation is to produce analysis of the relations established between public authorities, investors, owners and residents of the region between the years 1893 to 1924. This period was determined because of the year when the construction of the railroad began and the first year in which streets of the region beyond Santana appear on the map of the city of São Paulo, encompassing small neighborhoods to the urban perimeter. We start from the premise that the improvements in infrastructure invested by the public power during the First Republic were not exclusive needs of the city, but also reverberated among the demands of the inhabitants of the rural perimeter in the north region. However, the requests for improvements found difficulty when they came up against the interests of public authorities and private investors. Identifying the social face of these inhabitants becomes important to understand the performance of these groups as citizens participating in the processes of local improvement and enables us to clarify what was the place of the North Zone within the interests of expansion of the city.
