Abstract

Usually identified as author of representative Art Nouveau works in São Paulo, especially the Vila Penteado building, Carlos Ekman designed and constructed more than seven dozens of buildings in São Paulo, with many different academic references, which contributed to the diffusion of eclecticism in the city. Architect and engineer from Sweden, worked with the german Augusto Fried at "Fried & Ekman" between 1895 and 1900; with own office, from 1901 to 1922; and in partnership with his son, Sylvio Jaguaribe Ekman, at "Carlos Ekman & Filho", from 1923 to 1934. An inventory of his work, surveying primary and secondary sources - and problematizing its characteristics within the scope of the eclectic culture prevailing in São Paulo's society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - , will expand knowledge about the eclecticism and its role in the history of Brazilian architecture.
