Abstract

High human dependence on fossil fuels resulted in the necessity to develop new sources of renewable energy. Simultaneously, concerns about climate changes resulted the development of clean and renewable sources of energy. In Brazil the government support contributed for these sources of energy to spread. Thus, the increased demand for ethanol created a favorable scenario for the development of techniques such as second-generation ethanol in order to enhance ethanol production. Second generation-ethanol is produced by a better exploitation of lignocellulosic materials after pre-treatment of bagasse. However, during this pre-treatment process some residues with high carbohydrates rates are generated such as pentoses liquor. So, an alternative for the utilization of this residue is to use pentoses liquor to produce biogas and enhance pentoses liquor energy efficiency. Therefore, this research aims to identify strategies for reactor's operation to increase pentoses liquor energy efficiency by hydrogen production to enable second generation production. (AU)
