Abstract

The demersal ichthyofauna of the Ubatuba internal continental shelf region and the Cananéia-Iguapé estuarine-lagoon system, located on the north and south coast of the state of São Paulo, respectively, have been extensively studied concerning fish communities and population structure, and the life cycle of species in the coastal zone, considering the space and time. On the other hand, these regions are important shrimp fishing centers, and their by catch fauna is composed, in large part, by demersal fish. However, there are rare studies on demersal ichthyofauna or even ichthyofauna accompanying shrimp fisheries in a larger scale temporal perspective. Such studies allow to relate the ichthyofauna with physical and chemical alterations of the environment, predicting its ecosystem restoration. The objective of the present study is to compare demersal by catch ichthyofauna of the shrimp fishery from Ubatuba and Cananéia, and its socioeconomic and environmental importance on the north and south coast of the state, in order to identify possible changes in environmental quality from analysis of demersal ichthyofauna. The composition and structure of the demersal ichthyofauna and their distribution patterns will be analyzed, considering a greater temporal variability that covers from 1990 to 2017. (AU)
