Emotional maternal health and health condition of babies admitted on the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

Abstract

The emotional maternal health can be disturbed due the baby's health condition. The presence of emotional indicators can increase the difficulty in facing this new situation and affect the interaction between the mother and her newborn child. This research aims to describe emotional maternal health of mothers who have babies admitted to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and compare this data with the severity of baby's health condition. This research is part of the major project entitled "Maternal and babies variants: correlation between interaction and infant development". A 25 mothers-babies group will take part in the reserseach. The babies admitted to the project will be selected among those who are in the NICU for at least a week and at most 15 days. The babies will be of both biological sex, with different health issues, all born in Santa Isabel maternity, in Bauru, São Paulo. In order to collect data, an interview about sociodemographic items and information about the pregnancy and childbirth will be applied. The data about maternal emotional health will be collected using the following instruments: Perceived Stress Scale - PSS, The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). For assessing babies clinical condition on the NICU the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology Perinatal Extension-II (SNAP-PE II) will be used. The SNAP-PE score will be achieved through babies records. The instruments applied to evaluate maternal health condition will be applied to participants whose babies are admitted to the NICU. The mothers, after visiting their babies on the NICU, will be invited to take part in the research. In the event of acceptance they will answer the instruments. The correlation between SNAP-PE data and PSS, STAI and BDI-II data will be tested with Spearman coefficient. (AU)
