Abstract Currently, the airline industry generates approximately 2% of man-made carbon dioxide emissions, which is a small but increasing percentage, and that may reach 3% by 2030. The airline industry established the goal of achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020 and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 50% (from 2005 levels) by 2050. An alternative to promote this reduction is the use of biofuel in replacement of or mixed with fossil fuel. However, the main concern is the inadequate performance of biodiesel at low temperatures due to the formation of solid phases that may clog fuel filters and ducts, creating flow issues, and eventually damaging the engines, which depends mainly on the concentration of saturated fatty acid esters. Jet fuel is generally of a higher quality than other fuels, which present less critical applications for heating or transportation. However, adding biodiesel to jet fuel can increase the temperature of formation of solid phases, making the use of additives necessary to reduce the risk of freezing or explosion, as well as other properties. Thus, the knowledge of the solid-liquid equilibrium is of utmost importance. Some of the parameters for quantifying the risk of solid formation are the cloud and pour points. The risk of fire and explosion is related to the flash point. This project specifically addresses the study of the solid-liquid equilibrium of mixtures of fatty acid ethyl esters and compounds found in jet fuel, as well as the study of the flash point of these mixtures. | |
