Abstract

The asteroid deflection is a recent and rapidly expanding area of astrodynamics. The growing interest of scientists in this field of study is mainly due to two reasons: one fundamentally economic and the other for the defense of the planet. The former is intended to deflect asteroids into terrestrial orbits so they could be mined, given their abundance of minerals; the second, and which currently arises greater interest, is aimed at avoiding large collisions with the Earth, which could cause enormous material and life losses. This research will aim to study the dynamics of asteroid deflection as well as the guidance and control of spacecraft associated with this task. The intention is to improve existing approaches and also to propose new alternatives. In order to do so, it is initially intended to study the dynamics of asteroid deflection and techniques for the guidance and control of spacecraft for this purpose; later, it is hoped to improve already existing approaches and, possibly, to propose new solutions. The training of qualified professionals in this field of study should be a mandatory goal of a country of continental dimensions such as Brazil, so that it can be inserted as one of the prominent players in global geopolitics and be prepared for the economic advances that this century reserves.
