Abstract

It is believed that the aluminum (Al)-induced decrease in leaf hydration is due to its direct effect of Al on reducing the root growth, which would have low root surface and volume for water uptake. However, there is previous evidence suggesting that the Al-induced decrease in stomatal conductance (gs) could be related to a low intrinsic root capacity for water uptake and transport. While some studies indicate that abscisic acid (ABA) is involved in Al toxicity and Al resistance mechanisms in roots, the role of ABA as a root-to-shoot Al stress signal is still unclear. Considering the main role of ABA in gs, we will investigate whether Al decreases root hydraulic conductance leading to leaf dehydration triggering ABA biosynthesis in leaves or if Al directly causes ABA biosynthesis in the root signaling water deficit to the shoots. For this, we will use wild-type (WT) and flacca mutant (flc - ABA deficient) genotypes of tomato grown in semi-hydroponic conditions with and without Al. Water relations parameters, such as gs, water potential, relative water content will be measured in leaves while the ABA content will be measured in roots and leaves.
