Abstract

Applications of nanotechnology are increasing in several sectors such as industry, agriculture, consumer products and food. In agriculture, the use of nanotechnology has been receiving increasing attention partly because of the possible application of nanopesticides in soils. These nanopesticides contain small amounts of pesticides as active ingredients (nanoemulsions, polymer-based nanopesticides) or engineered structures (inorganic nanoparticles as active ingredients or associated with pesticide) and exhibit useful properties against unwanted organisms [1]. For example, some formulations containing inorganic nanoparticles show antimicrobial activity (eg. TiO2), have been used to control of agricultural pests (eg. SiO2), inhibit the growth of plant pathogens (Ag NPs), suppress the growth of bacterial blight (Cu NPs) or protect stored grains (Al NPs) [2]. However, the limited knowledge of their effects on human health and the safety of these nanoparticles is a growing concern. Therefore, it is necessary to develop analytical methods for the quantification of these nanomaterials in order to understand the benefits and risks of the applications mentioned before. Consequently, the aim of this project is to develop analytical methods for the determination of copper and zinc nanoparticles in soils by an emerging analytical techinique Ion Chromatography Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (IC - SP - ICP - MS).
