Abstract

The aim of this project is to study Dixon's approach to describe extended bodies in General Relativity. In particular, we will revisit the case of an oscillating dumbbell in the Schwarzschild spacetime, and compare the results to those obtained in the context of the relativistic glider, introduced by one of the authors in [E. Gueron, R. A. Mosna, Phys. Rev. D75, 081501 (2007)]. This will lead to a better understanding of this effect from a fundamental viewpoint, both by shedding light on its physical nature and by having better control on the relevant approximations.
