Abstract

The acquisition and improvement of social skills occur throughout the individual's life, but it is known that periods of transition to new groups and contexts are crucial moments, because they expose the individual to new social interaction goals that consequently cause changes in his or her repertoire of interpersonal behaviors. Academic integration requires interpersonal skills, but also provides demands to improve it, so developing social skills in students can lessen the negative impacts of the first year. For this reason it seems evident that a prior repertoire of social skills facilitates the integration process. Several authors point out the need for programs with this approach, in order to prevent numerous factors that the lack of social skills in the university context can lead to, such as: avoidance, stress, depression, low academic performance, decreased self-esteem, difficulty in completing course, anxiety and several other interpersonal deficits. The present study aims to analyze the effect of an intervention in the development of social skills and in the integration of higher education in academic contexts. The study will have 24 new entrants. Of these, 12 will comprise the experimental group and the other 12, the control group. Two evaluation instruments (IHS and EAVA) will be used as pre and post test. The data will be analyzed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. It is expected that after the intervention occurs the increase of social skills scores and academic integration of university students. (AU)
