Abstract

Throughout childhood, the foundation for healthy development and mental health is laid. However, during the current COVID-19 pandemic, scientific evidence has shown damage to children's mental health and a decrease in their general well-being. Therefore, it is notable the importance of developing innovative, preventive, accessible, and effective interventions to assist the mental health of children. It is in this context the relevance of empathy is highlighted for healthy development, which has been increasingly evidenced in the scientific literature. This has fostered the creation of intervention programs for the development of this skill in children. An effective approach to promoting empathy is through bibliotherapy as it does not require large resources. With the restrictions and risks arising from the pandemic, internet-based interventions have been a useful strategy to promote access to mental health care for children. In this sense, this study aims to investigate the changes in empathic skills after an internet-based group intervention performed using the bibliotherapy method. For the study, children from a municipal school in Ribeirao Preto will be assessed. The methodology used will be mixed. A pre and post-test evaluation of empathic skills through the application of the Social Skills Scale, Problematic Behaviors, and Academic Competence (SSRS-BR) will be conducted. Data collected will be submitted to a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Moreover, a recording will be carried out, along with a transcription thereof. The data collected will be submitted for content analysis. It is expected that after the intervention an increase in the children's empathic skills will be observed.(AU)
