Abstract

This project aims to examining which of the "Sublime" concepts who Edmund Burke describes in A philosophical inquiry into an origin of our ideas of the sublime and the beautiful, help in the interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat. The analysis of the human passions described by Burke in his book, shows their effects for pain or pleasure, and the conception of "Sublime" characterizes the passions who cause pain. Since the Edgar Allan Poe presents many diferents philosophical questions in his tale, this project want to investigate which they are and show the conception of "Sublime" of Burke in that. The horror described by Poe in the se-quences of the events in the tale has numerous features of Burke's conception. This project want to describe them. (AU)
