Comparison among computerized and manual analysis by using ImageJ software for evaluating the results of sclerotherapy of telangiectasias

Abstract

Telangiectasias are small venules abnormally dilated, located in the intradermal portion of the skin, whose diameter does not exceed 1 mm and are mainly associated with aesthetic complaints. The chemical sclerotherapy is the first choice for treating telangiectasia and the effectiveness is determined by eliminating the treated vessels, usually evaluated by qualitative photographic analysis. Considering the development of digital imaging analysis, the tendency to quantify phenomena comes as a logical evolution from simple qualitative observation or qualifying. Several studies show that fractal analysis can be used in the field of biological sciences and from that we raised the hypothesis that Telangiectasias would also present fractal properties. Objectives: To explore the effectiveness of automated fractal analysis by compared with the manual method in quantification of the treatment of telangiectasia by sclerotherapy. Methods: From photos obtained in a previous study on the treatment of lower limb telangiectasias sought to analyze the pre and post sclerotherapy results of 98 patients subjected to two different treatments, with polidocanol 0.2% + glucose 70% versus Glucose 75% pure. The photographs of the participants remain under our domain and will be re-examined, now in an automated way, using a series of processing and using ImageJ " software, ultimately generating results through fractal analysis. These results will be compared with those previously obtained so the factibility of the automatic method can be determined.
