Abstract

It is well known that in globally-hyperbolic spacetimes the evolution of quantum fields is uniquely determined by the initial conditions on a Cauchy hypersurface. This is not the case for non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. For instance, in spacetimes with a naked singularity, the quantum field may interact in a non-trivial way with the singularity. Similarly, in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, information can flow in(out) from(to) infinity. Wald argued that a physically sensible dynamics arise when one requires that the spatial operator in Klein-Gordon equation is self-adjoint. This requirement translates into prescribing boundary conditions at spacetimes singularities or at spatial infinity. We aim to find the effects of these boundary conditions on semiclassical quantities, such as the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor. In this way, we may be able to understand how quantum processes affect the structure of non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes.
