Abstract

The most prevalent cancer in companion animals is mammary neoplasia, especially affecting females of various breeds. Concomitant to this, the number of therapies for cancer treatment has expanded, although the most usual, such as surgery and chemotherapy, become ineffective in some cases, requiring the use of alternative therapies aided by the advent of biotechnology. A promising therapeutic approach is a use of some viruses, natural or modified, with oncolytic activity. These viruses replicate selectively on cancer cells and destroy them, without causing damage to normal tissues, promoting tumor regression. Thus, the objective of this project is to characterize the oncolytic activity of avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1) in neoplastic cell lines derived from female dogs mammary tumors and in vitro cultured. During infection, the cells will be analyzed morphologically in order to observe possible cytopathic effects. Cytotoxicity assays will be performed to determine the cytotoxic potential of the virus and then cell cycle and cell death analyzes to determine the role of the virus in the cell cycle and the mechanism of cell death, respectively. As a control, non-neoplastic canine cell lines will be used.
