Abstract

This Project intends to develop a hybrid and multidisciplinary research, in which Dance and Semiotics are approached as two subjects capable to create an interesting dialogue. When it comes to Semiotics, it is chosen to work with Charles Sanders Peirce's Sign Theory, because it brings a broad approach on the aspects of languages and significances, giving focus to the cognitive process of apprehension of significant phenomena. 'Dance', inside this Project, is taken as a scenic, artistic, cultural and communicational process: it is considered as a language, as a process full of signs, being, itself, a sign that appears through many aspects in human life. The main goal of this research is to discover new and critical possibilities of thinking 'Dance' currently. The proposal is to find a way of thinking that contemplates theoretical and practical sides of dance- its ways of conception as an artistic process and its ways of appreciation. The methods chosen to proceed with this research include observation and experimentation of 'dance process' that happen inside some artistic groups and during the conception of own researchers' projects. These observations are meant to analyze and create thoughts about: 1- the 'movement' as a sign in dance; 2- the body as a media that updates the movements and other significances and 3- art and dance seen as communicational process (how signs are created; what are the thoughts that surrounds these signs). This research dialogues with some author and theories: Semiotics (Peirce and Santaella), 'Corpomídia' Theory (Greiner and Katz), the conception of "Body without wishes" (Helena Bastos) and the Artifice Theory (Richard Sennet).
