Abstract

This is to investigate the hypothesis that the notion of « care of the self » must be understood in close relation with two other notions that gain decisive importance in the last phase of Foucault's thinking, that is, the notion of « government » and the notion of « subjectivity ». In reading the problem of the « care of the self » as an unfolding of the latter two notions, it seems to us that it gains a more consistent and coherent meaning with the researches that Foucault had developed since the 1980's in the Collège de France, as well as with the publication of the two last volumes of « History of Sexuality ». In order to investigate this hypothesis, it will be necessary to make a more detailed analysis of the courses « On the Government of the Living » and « Subjectivity and Truth », especially from the passages in which Foucault deals with the problems of « government by truth » and « techniques of self ».
