Abstract

Information regarding osmolality and plasma volume are sent to the CNS, modulating activities of specific regions. Thus, activation of the neuroendocrine system and secretion of hormones such as AVP, OT and natriuretic peptides, triggering behavioral responses such as thirst and appetite to salt, in order to reestablish the hydroelectrolyte balance. It is well established in the literature, including in data published by our group, the relationship between OT and ANP by restoring body fluid volume to normal levels in experiments involving blood volume expansion. In addition, recent data have shown that OT and ANP have antiobesity effects in obese rats induced by diet, such as reduction of body weight, increase of lipolysis and beta-oxidation of fatty acids, as well as reduction of glucose intolerance and resistance to insulin. In previous data from our laboratory, we observed that obese rats presented greater weight of retroperitoneal adipose tissue compared to animals with control diet. However, when submitted to water deprivation, there was a reduction of retroperitoneal adipose tissue weight in obese animals. Therefore, based on preliminary data from both the literature and our group, and further studies are needed to understand the relationship between the effects of these two hormones on obesity, our hypothesis is that OT and ANP together modulate lipolysis in retroperitoneal adipose tissue and weight loss in diet-induced obese adult rats. Our objective is to analyze the effects of OT on retroperitoneal adipose tissue lipolysis and its correlation with ANP secretion in adult and obese rats.
