Abstract The objective of this project is the construction of an acoustic levitation system to handle small objects. To achieve this purpose, an ultrasound source is coupled to a reflecting surface to produce a required waveform. By adjusting the distance between the source and the reflector, a standing wave is obtained producing several resonance modes in which the amplitude increases considerably. When a small object is placed in the space between the source and the reflector it is directed to a pressure zone in which by means of pressure nodes of the standing wave. After the construction of the acoustic levitator, tests will be performed with styrofoam particles and liquid droplets. The acoustic levitation force will be determined and compared to a damped mass-spring system. | |
