Abstract
The objective of this proposal is to develop novel ultrasonic devices for levitating objects in mid-air. This objective will be pursued through a collaboration between researchers from the Institute of Physics/University of São Paulo, the Laboratory of Ultrasonics at the Polytechnic School/University of São Paulo, and the visiting researcher Asier Marzo from University of Bristol. The applicant is one of the leading figures in the use of high-power ultrasonic emitters to levitate objects in mid-air, whereas the visitor is a world expert in the use of multiple low-power emitters to generate intricate acoustic fields that manipulate levitated objects. The general idea of the visit is to interchange knowledge in these two different ways of achieving acoustic levitation. A more specific objective is to combine the expertise from the two researchers to create a hand-held device capable of manipulating small and fragile objects such as electronic components or insects. In addition, the visitor will also collaborate with the FAPESP regular project entitled "Development of acoustic levitation systems" (grant no. 2017/27078-0). We believe that this research internship will increase the knowledge of both researchers, foster future collaboration between two of the main scientists in mid-air acoustic levitation and produce a levitation device that would only be feasible with the researchers working together.
