Abstract

Illuminated manuscripts are important objects for the study of images in the Middle Ages. Among them, a specific group has received little attention, the liturgical manuscripts, which relate to a field of studies also still little explored by historians, the medieval liturgy. We propose in this work to analyze the Homily cataloged by the Municipal Library of Cambrai with the number 528. Made between the 11th and 12th centuries for the Benedictine abbey of Saint-André-du-Câteau, it contains 273 folios with copies of sermons and homilies, numerous images - full or partial, in the margins and initials. Understanding how these miniatures were produced, how they were seen and used brings us the possibility of recognizing the role that images played in this type of object and in the societies in which they were produced and seen.
