Abstract

The increasing global urbanization has produced precarious spaces of existence, favoring the formulation of the concept of social vulnerability. This phenomenon, as part of the production and reproduction of capital in the present period, has intensified vastly in the countries of peripheral capitalism, as in the case of Brazil. The present project arose from the need to understand these spatial modes of existence from the point of view of geography, since social vulnerability has been a concept approached other the social sciences, but which in Geography lacks a systematization. For this reason, this work aims to analyze the issue of social vulnerability in the light of geographical concepts; characterizing the life condition of the subjects living under the influence of this intense vulnerability; understand the perception of these subjects regarding social vulnerability in their territories; and finally, to establish the relationships between social vulnerability, territory and subjects. Two areas of social vulnerability were selected, one in Londrina - PR and another in Presidente Prudente - SP. In these areas, quantitative data will be collected, mainly on health and social development. Parallel to this, interviews will be conducted through semistructured scripts with the subjects living in these areas, based on methodologies of analysis of the Discourse of Grounded Theory. A participatory map of social vulnerability with the community will still be produced, seeking to correlate information from reality in order to have a more comprehensive product of the Brazilian social issue from the point of view of the subjects who live and reproduce precarious spatial modes of existence.
