Abstract

An important current challenge for engineering community is to prevent the occurrence of failures during the mechanical structures operation, such as aircraft, especially to safe human lives and financial values. The area is called Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), which involves a set of techniques, mainly non-destructive ones, with the objective of detecting damages in initial states, avoiding their propagation and the occurrence of accidents. In this area many works of researches present analysis of input and output signals obtained from the structure with sensors and actuators coupled for damage detection, and commonly they not show detail of the interaction between the damage and waves that propagate in the structure from an excitation generated by the actuators. In this context, the main goal of this project is to study the interactions of longitudinal and flexural waves, reflected and transmitted, into symmetric cracks. It is used the state vector modeling to investigate the waves amplitudes and the spectrum of frequencies for different lengths of damage.
