Abstract

While the history of Brazilian historiography has been studied in important qualitative studies of authors and their works, we still lack a quantitative, exhaustive analysis regarding the most recent period of such history - that of the historiography practiced in university departments, and, more specifically, in graduate programs. This project aims at studying the process by means of which this configuration of Brazilian historiography was developed, and how it slowly became the mainstream, hegemonic model for the writing of history in Brazil. To achieve this goal, this project encompasses (1) the making of a research instrument, a systematic catalogue of all Ph.D. theses and M.A. dissertations produced from 1942 to 2000, and (2) the quantitative analysis of the gathered data in terms of thematic prevalence, as well as supervision relationships, in order to test the possibility of a concept of "historiographical field".
