Abstract

Children in our society are all too often subjected to physical violence, emotional deprivation and inappropriate sexual behaviors. These negative life experiences are among the strongest predictors of psychiatric illness, aggressive and violent behaviors including suicide in adulthood, with strong and lifelong effects. Recent research has suggested that early-life adversity may influence development of certain personality traits and negative mental health outcomes by changing the chemical structure of DNA. These effects, known as epigenetics were initially observed in animal studies and subsequent research suggested that they also occur in humans. The study will use a combination of high throughput techniques, including single-cell sequencing, followed by epigenome analysis, aiming to identify epigenetic changes associated with early environmental adversity.
