Abstract

This research project aims to read EZLN's (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional), discursive production - its declarations and communications - in order to advance a number of questions related to the repeating themes and structures that compose its vast archive. The intention, however, is not catalogue or submit the archive under a particular order so as to limit its reading possibilities; much to the contrary, I hope to open a new set o question by proposing to include this discursive production within the scope of the manifesto, a peculiar genre that exists between description and invention, between bodily acts and speech acts, between death and survival, between defeat and victory. Without abiding to a limitless adhesion to the linguistic and territorial methods of combat employed by the EZLN, I am interested in comprehending the modes through which theory produced in the university (chiefly Post-Colonialism and Post-Structuralism) and by Zapatismo complicate themselves mutually. To confront these theoretical modes, so as to also demonstrate their uncanny intersections, however, seems to be insufficient if other equally relevant discursive productions are not taken into account, which can contribute displace a new the location from which the questions are being formulated. As such, in a comparative exercise of sorts, I propose to read the discursive production of the EZLN alongside texts written by Karl Marx, Emiliano Zapata, Ernesto Cardenal and the Guarani-Kaiowá, among others, in the hopes of reconfiguring the map of interpretive alliances.
