Influence of time of day in which aerobic training is performed on training-induced autonomic and vascular adaptations in hypertensive elderly

Abstract

This postdoctoral is a sequence of the candidate's research line developed during his M.S (FAPESP - 2011/03584-8) and PhD programs (FAPESP - 2014/21667-6) and includes collaborations with the Circulatory Autonomic Control Laboratory and the University of Oregon. The prevalence of hypertension increases every year, and alterations of cardiovascular autonomic mechanisms and endothelial function are present in this disease, leading to the increase of systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure levels (BP) as well as increasing the cardiovascular risk. Aerobic training is recommended for the treatment of hypertension due to its well-known hypotensive effect beside its benefits on autonomic and vascular parameters. An interesting and poorly studied aspect is that BP and its regulatory mechanisms present circadian pattern, which suggest that aerobic training may provide different effects when executed at different times of day, as it was seen for BP, an original and high impact data demonstrated in candidate's Ph.D thesis. However, it is not known how cardiovascular autonomic regulation and the vascular function act on the hemodynamic control after performing aerobic training at different times of day, which might be called a "window of opportunity" enjoined by exercise at this time of day. Thus, the current study will investigate the effect of the time of the day at which training is executed on cardiovascular autonomic regulation and vascular function. For this, 26 hypertensive elderly males and females (e60 years old), after screening, will participate in initial evaluations that will measure: cardiac and peripheral baroreflex control, muscular sympathetic nervous activity, endothelial function, vascular conductance, nitric oxide bioavailability, peripheral vascular resistance and BP. Then, they will be randomly allocated in two groups (MT - Morning training or ET - Evening training) that will training on cycle ergometer, for 10 weeks, with a frequency of 3 time/week, for 45 min, with an intensity increasing from the anaerobic threshold to 10% below the respiratory compensation point. After the interventions, the subjects will be reevaluated. A two-way between-within ANOVA will be used, (Pd0.05). (AU)
