The present research aims to investigate how culture influenced the configuration of the Northeast colonial house, between the 16th and 19th centuries. The research will be carried out through anthropological, sociological and biological criteria on the architectural production of the colonial period in Recife and Salvador. The project was structured in six stages. The first, theoretical approach to home and culture. The second, urban formation of the colonial city in northeastern Brazil. The third, culture and anthropology (customs, habits and beliefs) in the colonial Northeastern house. The fourth, culture and sociology (symbol system) in the Northeastern colonial house. The fifth, culture and biology (construction techniques and adaptation to the environment) in the Northeastern colonial house. The fifth, iconographic production of the Northeastern colonial house. The work contributes to the studies of the Brazilian colonial house, the relationship between architecture and culture, Brazilian house history, Brazilian vernacular architecture, and the dialogue between architecture and semiotics.
