Abstract The contradiction of interests between the integral protection of the State Park of the Alto Ribeira (PETAR) and the traditional soil management of slash-and-burn (coivara), practiced by peasant communities that have inhabited the area since before its constitution, is controversial since their way of agricultural production is seen as a risk factor to the maintenance of the local ecosystem. In this context, this work intends to verify the possible risks to the local ecosystem caused by the soil management practiced by these communities. In this way, both pedogical and vegetative analyses of the "caboclo" territory of Ribeirão dos Camargos in PETAR will be made through 1) morphological, physical and chemical analyses of three pedologic profiles, two in old plantation areas and one in a primary forest land; 2) analyses of the stages of natural vegetation on these soils. The united analyses of these elements will culminate in an integrated interpretation of the way that soil and vegetation reestablish themselves after the burning and the cultivation practiced by the community. | |
