Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), compared to traditional procedures (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy), is proving a promising clinical technique in the treatment of various diseases such as cancer, non-cancerous lesions and infectious diseases. However, as well as other techniques, PDT has some limitations. An alternative to overcome the limitations is the development of new photosensitizers (PS) which bring together a largest number of photophysical, chemical and biological ideal characteristics for use in PDT. In this context, this project intends to proceed with the studies of new PS, performing the synthesis, characterization (structural and photophysical) of unpublished systems, consisting of macrocycles meso-tetrathienyl porphyrin substituted, linked to different chiral groups which in this case are four different amino acids (L- D-Alanine and L- D-Tryptophan). The addition of amino acids will evaluate the influence of chirality in photodynamic behavior of these systems, that is an important parameter, but still little explored in studies involving PDT.
