Abstract

The intense anthropogenic activities have increased the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil, through the excessive use of chemicals; improper disposal and accumulation of solid and liquid waste, thus posing a risk of pollution and contamination of soil and water. Leguminous tree species have favorable characteristics to grow rapidly in degraded soils as well as potential for phytoremediation of these contaminants. Phytoremediation is a technique that uses plants to recover soils contaminated by heavy metals. The development of sustainable technologies, effective and low cost for recovery of areas contaminated by heavy metals are urgent. This study aims to characterize the physiological response, to determine the tolerance and potential phytoremediation of Leucaena leucocephala to copper and iron metals. The experiment will be conducted in a greenhouse, with a completely randomized design for both metals (Cu and Fe). The soil will be contaminated with five treatments, in addition to the control, and will later be transferred to plastic plant bag of seedlings with capacity for 2 dm-3 of soil, seeds of Leucaena leucocephala will be planted directly on contaminated soil and their germination and growth will be monitored: photosynthetic parameters will be analyzed and, after collection of the material, the tissues will be separated, washed, dried on paper towel, and weighed; nodules will be counted and weighed. Chlorophyll and phenol content will be quantified in the leaves. Quantification of amino acids, proteins, ureides and proline in the tissues will be evaluated, as well as the determination of nutrient contents and phytoremediation potential of the species.
