Abstract

Recent estimates suggest that about 250 species of invertebrate metazoan parasitize marine catfish from the Ariidae family worldwide. Although this number suggests a great diversity of organisms parasitizing these hosts, it is necessary to reflect that so far only a restricted number of ariids have been examined for parasites. An example of that are the parasitic flatworms of the Monogenoidea Class, where only 19% of the ariids species known were examined for this group of parasites. It is evident that our knowledge of the diversity of this group of organisms is still incomplete and that any effort to implement a research program aimed at documenting the monogenoids parasites of marine catfish will contribute to the knowledge about biodiversity. The aim of this project is to inventory the parasitic fauna of monogenoids parasites of ariids catfish of the Brazilian coast, in order to establish the necessary taxonomic basis to propose phylogenetic hypotheses for the monogenoids studied and to elucidate the coevolutionary processes responsible for the diversification patterns of the parasites associated to the ariids catfish of the Brazilian coast.
