Abstract

Low soil water availability is often the main limitation to sugarcane growth in Brazil. Considering the recent expansion of sugarcane to warmer and drier regions of the country, it is important to determine the hydraulic conditions that determine drought stress in sugarcane. The use of process-based agrohydrologic models stands out as a less costly and more effective option for understanding the influence of environmental factors on sugarcane growth and development. The objective of this project is to estimate the limiting matric potentials of the Feddes transpiration reduction function (h3l and h3h) for sugarcane using inverse modeling with the SWAP/WOFOST model. The model calibration and validation will be carried out in relation to h3l and h3h, using two independent experimental data sets. Then, the model will be used for the sensitivity analysis of the crop yield and water productivity to the calibrated parameters and for simulations of sugarcane using six soils from the sugarcane producing region of Piracicaba, SP, with stochastically obtained present and future climate data. Through this novel study, we expect to improve the prediction of water stress in sugarcane, showing its effects on crop yield and on water balance for different edaphoclimatic conditions.
