Study of dental formation chronology related to the anatomy of deciduous teeth

Abstract

Objectives: This project aims to study the enamel formation chronology in human deciduous incisor teeth collected from individuals with known prenatal history, as for example, pregnancy complications, pregnancy medication, and time of gestation. Based on this data, we expect to establish a correlation between the anatomical position of the neonatal line and the child s birth conditions. Materials and Methods: In this study 30 primary incisors will be analyzed from individuals with known prenatal history. This teeth will be cut longitudinally and ground, in order to take pictures under bright and dark field microscopy (with polarized light), to measured de distance between the neonatal line and the amelodentinal juntion (ADJ). There will be 2 groups of children, one of children born preterm (37 weeks) and one with children born after 40 weeks of gestations (/- 2 weeks). Statistical analysis will be employed to determine whether there are differences in the distance from the ADJ to the neonatal line between the groups. Our expectation, according to the literature, it is less enamel formed in the group of preterm children. This study s results will very likely be useful for various areas of knowledge.
