Abstract

Brazilian political science does not usually value the electoral experiences prior to the democratization of the country. Even for the regime of 1946-1964, electoral results have not yet been disaggregated at the level of municipalities. The proposal is to organize data by electoral zone from the first proportional elections (in the 1930s) until the 1964 coup precisely to be able to compare the two electoral contexts. The period of 1933-1937 had an electoral agenda generally unknown. First, the elections to the Constituent Assembly of 1933 took place. The following year, the elections to the Chamber of Deputies and the State Assemblies took place. Finally, the municipal elections took place between 1935 and 1937. They are scattered information in the bulletins of the Regional Electoral Courts (TREs), in the State Official Gazettes and in the periodicals. For the regime of 1946-1964, whose electoral calendar is well documented by political historiography, electoral data are basically stored in the TREs, in addition to the collection of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), in Brasília.
