Abstract

Brazilian Government promoted the use of ethanol as fuel during the oil crises in 1970s for better energy security and energy independence. Soon afterwards, this dependence on ethanol fuel had reduced due to decreasing oil prices. However, Brazil developed and maintained the infrastructure for production, distribution and usage of ethanol. A phenomenological thermodynamic model will be used to carry out engine simulations. The objectives of the fellowship can be summarized by defining following activities. a)Investigating the effects of ethanol fuel on the performance of downsized spark-ignition engine by applying the strategy of Miller cycle. b)Exergy losses will be quantified for a turbocharged direct injection Spark-ignition engine. c)The effects of EGR and ethanol fuel on second law efficiency for a turbocharged engine will be investigated. d)Investigating the effects of different engine operating parameters on cycle-to-cycle variations for a flex-fuel spark-ignition engine. e)The effects of EGR and turbocharging on engine cyclic variations will also be evaluated.f)Identify the needed instrumentation for the Research Engine Laboratory: physical properties to be measured (pressures, temperatures, mass flows, engine speed and torque, encoder to synchronization, etc.). Define instruments characteristics and possible product suppliers.g)To supervise the undergraduate students (scientific initiation) in their activities in the didactic Engine Laboratory and GT-Power software.
